Close finishes for an intense event

Monteleone di Orvieto, Regione Toscana, Italy. Sunday 18 December 2016.

Last Sunday the Italian season closer was held in Monteleone di Orvieto.

Besides the important qualifier and junior races, the focus was on the CEIYJ1* 84km, CEI1* 84km, and CEN 84km.

In the CEN 84km there were 11 starters and 7 finishers, with Giulia Maraghini (Nordai) and Chiara Salvadori (O’ Bajan Pipiter) crossing the line close together.

Giulia took the honours at just one second in front of Chiara. They had a safe lead over third-placed Marina Settembre (Rachele).

Drama arose for pack leader Luca Mariotti (Valida du Griffoul), who attacked the final loop in first position, but wasn’t able to hold onto his place, dropping back to the seventh spot.

In the CEIYJ1* 84km (8 starters and 6 finishers) Constanza Laliscia (Cold Ayre) rode steadily in first place throughout.

But under her calm demeanour the pressure was intense, since the top three riders never lost sight of each other and the podium places were separated by a mere eleven seconds.

Denisse Radin (Sulejman) started the final loop in third place, 14 seconds after the leader, but crossed the finish line in second place ahead of Stefano Osip (Ice Cool).

Another close finish was evident in the CEI1* 84km (12 starters and 11 finishers), with Massimo Columbu (Azell de Candesir) proving his skill by starting the final loop in third position but seizing the lead at the finish line, with Serena Vittor (Jupette Dell Orsetta) finishing in second.

Carolina Tavassoli Asli (The Go Socks), previously in second place at the beginning of the third loop, was forced to let her two competitors pass and take the final podium place. However, she was honoured with the ‘best conditioned horse’ award.

The condition awards in the other two races were for the winners: Giulia Maraghini atop Nordai (CEN 84 m) and Constanza Laliscia aboard Cold Ayre (CEIYJ 1* 84km).
