Trinidad, Uruguay – 4 & 5 February 2017

First competition in Uruguay holds promise for the 2017 season

Trinidad, Flores, Uruguay. 4-5 February 2017

For the season opener in Uruguay, races in the CEI1* 80km and CEI2* 120km were held in both junior and senior categories.

High temperature and high humidity proved no barrier to how the race developed in the CEI2* 120km, which was divided into 4 stages of 38, 34.5, 28.5 and the final 19km.

Top Uruguayan riders Valentina Méndez (Grappa HLM) and Agustina Baptista (Finita) were the prominent players in this race. Both fought for the first position with a speed in the last stage of 31.83 km/h. Valentina Mendez, third in the FEI ranking in 2016, eventually crossed the finish line first, 40 seconds in front of Agustina Baptista.

Agustina noted: “Thank God we started the season with a good result. My mare debuted today at 120km and did it in very good form, always asking for more. The average speed was very good and in the last stage we flew. Every day Finita surprises us more.”

The winner in 120km Senior was Victoria Goñi (EL Mate): “It was a different race because we were few horses, but the main opposition was the weather, which was horrible, very humid and unbearable heat, and the stages became long because they reduced the number of stages from 5 to 4”.

The next day they ran the 80km in Senior and Young Rider. The CEI1* 80km was divided into three stages of 36, 25 and 19km, also with a good level and good average speeds despite the climatic conditions.

The winner in the seniors was Jesús Rodríguez (Faisan) who in the last stage went out to look for the first place at a speed of 31.44 km h, passing Martin Carcabelos (Preto) in the last stretch, who was leading from the start.

In the  Young Rider category the winner was the debutant Ema Sanchez (JQ Lam Beauty H Kadita), with second place for Valentina Mendez (Persa HLM).

The level seen in this first CEI competition of 1 star set the stage for a very high level of horses for the 2017 season, a story that will continue on 3 March.
