Abu Dhabi Festival Endurance Ride, Emirates International Endurance Village, Al Wathba, UAE. 23 March 2017.

There were two races scheduled for today as per tradition, with an event for ladies and one for private owners.
They both took place, as a CEN 100km, over four loops of 40, 25, 19 and 16 km.
The private owners started first at 0600 with 77 entrants and the ladies left at 0630 with 83 entrants.
The heavy rain earlier in the week turned out to be good for the track because the water, combined with the professional way the track has been worked on, made the surface harder.

Speeds were high, with the ladies riding faster than the private owners.

The biggest favourite among the private owners seemed to be Layl De Tensonnives, ridden by Mohammed Al Neyadi, but the horse was lame after the first loop.

Leader after the first and second loop was Salim Al Owais (Medinah) and at the start of the third loop the first six riders were within a minute of each other. Besides a small shift of positions these top six remained the same as after the first loop.

It was the same scenario after the third loop, besides the fact that Prem Singh (LM Estrellita) lost valuable time in the recovery, but the other five were still within the space of a minute.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long into the final loop to have the five contenders all together but the final sprint was between Salim Al Owais, who was leading the whole day, and Ahmad Al Shehhi (Onyx De l’Aigoual). The difference at the finish line was a few seconds in favour of the rider that was at the front at the time, Salim Al Owais; second place was for Ahmad Al Shehhi.

The display of Zabeel Stables was impressive because, besides victory, they took third place with Rashid Al Baloushi (Sabana du Sauveterre), fourth place with Sivapragasham Muthuweeran (Moondarra Maher) and fifth place with Mohammad Al Marri (Ma Tamh) who stated: “Yes, I’m happy with my fifth place. My horse is only six years old and this is his first race. I was expecting that I wouldn’t fight for victory but this horse has a bright future.”

Higher speeds were recorded with the ladies and, apart from the fact that Mariam Al Ansaari (Horr Ibn Jahir) led both the first and second loop, there was less consistency in the placings. After the second loop the previous top ten saw five horses being vetted out or dropping outside the top ten. The biggest gainer was Milena Mendez (Gotama of Gredos) who came from 18th to 4th place.

The gap between first and second, Bayan Abdulla (Frankie Thunderheart) was only 15 seconds and the others followed after more than one minute.

In the third loop we saw Kamila Kart (Razorback Mechano) coming in more than three minutes before the bigger group, but the pair also needed more time for the recovery.

She was able to hold the lead four seconds in front of Bayan Abdulla, with earlier leader Mariam Al Ansaari dropping to third place but still only seven seconds behind.

A victim of the compulsory recheck before the final loop was Maitha Al Qubaisi (Aladin Croix Noire), because the horse was lame.

The tension for the final loop was less than in the private owners’ race, with winner Kamila Kart coming in more than six minutes in front of Mariam Al Ansaari.

Kamila: “It’s always nice to win. But to be honest I believe I had the best horse today, this is a turbo.”

Third place went to Maryam Al Qasimi (Gheerulla Lamborghini) who rode a well-managed race being respectively in 24th, 9th, 8th and then finally 3rd place.

The quickest time of the private owners would have given a fifth place in the ladies’ race.
