Al Wathba Cup for private owners

Mohammad Ghanim al Marri takes top honours for Zabeel Stables.

img_8713On Saturday 29 October, 80 starters were present for the Al Wathba Cup, a 100km race restricted to private stables, as the season opener for the Emirates International Endurance Village.

Weather conditions were very good at the start but once the teams were into the second loop the heat rose to be an important factor.

Mohammad Ghanim al Marri, riding Ulysse de Kalliste, claimed the top spot. From the beginning he was never out of the top three, and started the last loop in second position at a minute and a half behind the front-runner.

Commenting before the podium ceremony, Mohammed stated: “Yes, I knew that I could catch the leader. My team kept me informed about the timing difference and I could see the cars in front of me. My horse was very good and I was confident to get a good result.”

The story was different for second-placed Salem Al Kitbi with Showman. They had a careful start and climbed steadily through the rankings in eleventh position after the first loop, followed by fifth place entering the second loop and fourth place at the start of the fourth and final loop.

img_9533Salem noted: “Showman is not so young any more but he is very special, and did a record race in Dubai two years ago. This is the first big race since then and I’m confident that it’ll only get better from here.”

Ahmad Al Shehhi was leading with Radji des Bruyers until the finish line came into sight.

“I knew the horse has a very good heart and recovers well. Unfortunately, at the very end of the race we lacked that extra power to maintain the lead. I’m not unhappy because I know the capabilities of the horse and can expect more good results.”

The fight was very close with only two seconds’ difference between the second and third place results.
