Endurance World...

In Brief: Annelie Eriksson (29) from Sweden

I am Annelie Eriksson, 29 years old from Bjursås, Sweden. I am the first and only professional endurance rider in Sweden. Endurance riding is my life and my aspiration is to become a European and World Champion one day.

Endurance World Annelie Eriksson. Final sprint. My philosophy is holistic. I see the horse, my team and myself as one body. To achieve world class results, all parts must interact in perfect harmony. My endurance aspiration takes all my time, but when I occasionally do something else I like to be with my family and friends, relax and listen to music. Swedish House Mafia is very good endurance riding music!

Why horses? Why endurance?

Horses have been a part of my DNA as long as I can remember. I started very, very young. Endurance riding has been a passion since the age of seven, but back then I also competed in jumping, dressage and flat racing with my Arabian ponies. My family has always been involved in sports and I guess we compete all the time. My stubbornness and will to win comes clearly from my dad. He is crazy. I constantly search for enduring challenges where mental and physical stamina are needed. I guess that is why I am so hooked on endurance riding.

The core team has always been my family, that is why I still have my home base in the outskirts of Sweden instead of somewhere down in the European continent. My mother is in charge of logistics and administration and my father is head of my groom team and present at all major competitions. The rest of my team is a good blend of skilled endurance sports people. I also have a complete training team at my home stables (riders and grooms who take care of the horses, when I am off competing). Right now, I have eight horses in training, all of an international standard.

About my achievements

I won my first race at an age of 12 and the Swedish Championship for young riders the same year. I am a member of the Swedish national team and have won the Swedish Championship five times and the Nordic Baltic Championships five times. I finished in seventh place in World Championship Young Riders and in tenth place in the European Championships 2011 in Florac. I have been the winner of CEI3*160 km several times as well as one race in Fontainebleau.

I strive for the top, no doubt about that. But not at any price. After a race, I want to look my horse in the eye and see good in there. Horse abuse and scandals within my sport make me depressed and unhappy. But I am also optimistic. Endurance riding is the most fantastic thing you can do on a horseback, and I foresee a bright and prosperous future for both myself and the sport as such. This is my life.
