Campo de Monta – 4 February 2017

Sergio Roman wins sprint in Trelew

Campo de Monta, Trelew, Chubut, Argentina. Saturday 4 February 2017.

Two races were on the agenda for Trelew with a CEIYJ1* 80km and a CEI1* 80km.

Weather conditions were a worry for the competitors, with temperatures up to 40 degrees on Friday. However, that changed on the day of the races, with colder weather and rain welcomed by the competitors.

Sergio Roman (Don Remigio) was riding in only his third CEI1*, but he was in the lead after the first loop. He dropped to second place after the second loop, allowing Matthias Conrad (Z T Shakgamaal) to lead in the third and final loop.
The final loop turned out to be a very exciting one, but the conditions weren’t ideal for Matthias as he dropped back to fifth in the final standings.
That opened the door for Sergio, but a late charge from Mariano Thill (Burak Maha) managed to close the gap. A sprint then ensued, which turned out in favour of Sergio. It was still all smiles for Mariano, though, since this was his return to racing after being sidelined for two years because of a fractured hip, a result of an accident in a race.

Third place went to experienced rider Mercedes Tapia (Cazon Obama). She commented: “The tracks were very attractive and technical at the same time, which I like a lot”.

The competition was less tense in the CEIYJ1*, where Camila Sanchez (Patagonia Picasso) never lost sight of first place after an impressive first and second loop, cruising to victory in the final loop.

A fight was on the cards after the second loop between Marlene Koss (G C Bad Boy) and Kathleen Conrad (G C Franca), but Marlene was vetted out at the final vet check because of irregular gait.

Third place went to Francisco Balverde (G C Inesperado).
