Dubai Crown Prince Festival – Day 3 – 15 March 2017

Sabrina Mendez and Al Reef Ajban Stables prove strongest in a suspense-filled finale.

Dubai Crown Prince Festival, Dubai International Endurance Village, Dubai, UAE. 15 March 2017.

On the third day of the Dubai Crown Prince Festival a race for mares was scheduled over 119km, divided in four loops: 39, 32, 30 and 18km.

Dubai Crown Prince FestivalYesterday’s race for private stables could be described as a nail-biting affair where we had to wait till the last kilometres to know who would win this CEN 100km. Today was a different script and the fight for top honours went on literally until the finish line separated first and second by six seconds.

The weather conditions for the past two days were hotter than usual. Today it was a covered sky but still very hot conditions.

Riders held nothing back and the average speeds were impressive.

In the first three loops we saw some of the frontrunners being vetted out such as Mohammed Al Marri (Castlebar Nabraska) and Ali Al Zarooni (Taliah).

The biggest gainer after the second loop was Mira Al Ansaari (Versys du Pesquier) but her stable (Al Bawadi Stables) was very cautious with their comments: “I’m not sure if we did a lot better or others hit some problems. But the third loop is long and the weather is very demanding so we have to be careful.”

Unfortunately Mira’s horse took a long time to recover after the third loop and the stable decided to retire the horse.

Dubai Crown Prince FestivalAll eyes were on the top three for the final loop.

In first position was Saeed Al Khayari (Shagaf), a place he occupied from the beginning.
But Hamdan Al Marri (SM Sirena Berta) was only two seconds behind and Sabrina Mendez (Flor del Caribe) completed the top three with a delay of thirty seconds.

It didn’t take too long before the three were racing together with Hamdan in the best position and he stayed in the front, increasing the speed to put pressure on the other two.
Saeed couldn’t keep the tempo and decided to slow down to bring the horse to the finish and claim third place.

Hamdan controlled the race, but Sabrina’s horse was still strong enough to come back and pass Hamdan in the closing stage of the race.
A very happy Sabrina stated: “I left in third position and I could catch them very quickly. We raced together but then they accelerated and I decided to keep my own speed. After the right turn (less than 5 km from the finish) I felt my mare was still good and we decided to go quicker. I didn’t know how it would turn out and was only confident in the last meters that we got it. This is such a nice victory because at a certain moment I thought that I lost sight of gold. You have to know that a month ago, in the other mares race, these two horses in front of me came first and second and my mare fifth.”
