L Raid Hípico Ciudad de Badajoz, Babajoz, Spain. 25 and 26 March 2017.

This race weekend organized by the Sociedad Hípica Lebrera was the 50th edition of the Raid Hípico Ciudad de Badajoz. Babajoz is a province of Western Spain close to the Portuguese border.

Two CEI1* 80km races were scheduled but the main focus was on the CEI2*140km (2x 70km) split into six loops, and there were also national races over distances of 80, 60 and 40 kilometres on each day of the weekend.

The CEI1* 80km on Saturday showed a well-balanced race for Francisco Carmona (Ruisonr Ph) who worked his way through the field with a sixth place after the first loop, a third after the second and finally the victory after the third and final loop. He had an average speed of 19.59 km/h.

L Raid Hípico Ciudad de BadajozThe same principle was used by Alejandro Montero (Anwar Kaled) who barely made it into the top ten after the first loop, had the third podium place in view after the second loop and validated his efforts with a silver medal at the finish.

Sofia Somoza (Cachin) was third after the first loop, dropped to a seventh after the second loop but managed to get back on the podium after the third loop.

Rogelio Garcia (Anwar Marea) was in front after the first vet check, but was vetted out because of irregular gait at the second vet check.

It was Pablo Herrera (Baney) who occupied the first spot at the start of the final loop but had to slow down considerably during the loop and finally was vetted out for irregular gait.

On Sunday there were fewer starters, 10 compared with 22 the previous day, for the CEI1* 80km and the race also developed in a steadier way.

Leading from the start was Paloma Ramire (Anwar Luna) and she never gave that position away, winning the race with a seven minute lead, with an average speed of 19.11 km/h.

Second place was for Carolina Batista (Carolans) who entered the top three after the second loop.

Gregorio Cordoba (Churruca) started the final loop in second place and arrived in front of Carolina but the horse had irregular gait.

Third place went to Rocio Valdecantos (Chacal).

L Raid Hípico Ciudad de BadajozThe prime race of the weekend was the CEI2* 140km over two days divided into six loops, of 30, 20, 20, 30, 20 and 20km.

Of the 25 starters 13 finished and it was complete dominance from Pedro Godinho (Montalban Endurance).

The Portuguese rider and his mount claimed this race as theirs from the start.

He was leading after the first loop without really pushing his horse, leading to the good recovery times.

Pedro felt very comfortable in this position and handled the situation very well and recorded an average speed of 17.47 km/h and a lead of over 30 minutes on the second place.

The fortunes were different for Marisa Chamorro (Tirante) who was the whole race in second position but then got vetted out at the final vet check with metabolic.

That second place went to Angel Rodriguez (Galia) who at the first day didn’t have sight of a podium place and tackled day two in fifth position. After the first loop of the second day he was third, then fell to fifth and ultimately came in second spot.

João Moura (Faisca) claimed, third place and also didn’t have a view of the podium after the first day but made a big jump from sixth to third in the final loop.
