Gold for Byron Alfaro and Guatemala in Sports Festival 2017

Hipódromo del Sur La Aurora, Guatemala City, Guatemala. Saturday 1 July 2017.
The Central American Games 2017 were held in Guatemala. These regional games are eligible for Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, this year´s host Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama.

The disciplines included were, besides Endurance, Dressage, Eventing and Jumping.
Under a cloudy sky, with a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius early in the morning, the track took the riders through the mountainous terrain in Tecpán, Chimaltenango. The race village was set in a small valley at Pueblo Real, close by the Interamerican Highway. The CEI1* 80km was divided into three loops, 30, 30 and 20 km.

Endurance World Guatemala. Team gold. The tracks led the competitors through the lush fresh green of vegetable plantations for which the region is famous, and pine forests, at an average altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, placing a challenge for horses and riders. Crew points were along the trail at the edge of small villages of locals, indigenous farmers. Riding these trails in the middle of the rainy season added to the challenge, for the recent rains left huge puddles to be navigated through.

Gold in the team’s classification was for host Guatemala with Luis Miguel de la Roca (Forte), Gabriel Ramos (Tsuki) and David Castañeda (Gallardo).
None of the other teams qualified for this classification.

Endurance World Guatemala. Second place. For the individual classification, it was the Guatemalan rider Mauricio Evans (Zara ME) who was leading from start till the end but did not pass the final vet check because of irregular gait.
This gave victory to Costa Rican rider Byron Alfaro (Mareth) with a save lead on local hero Luis Miguel de la Roca (Forte) winning silver, and team colleague Gabriel Ramos (Tzuki) taking bronze.
Fourth place was also for a Guatemalan rider David Castañeda (Gallardo), and the fifth place was for Mexican rider Amador Lobato with Charlie.

Best Condition was awarded to Tzuki, ridden by Gabriel Ramos (GUA).
