Incredible racing at HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup

Emirates International Endurance Village, Al Wathba, United Arab Emirates. Saturday 10 February 2018. One of the UAE season highlights, along with the Sheikh Mohammed Cup, is HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup in Al Wathba.

A large number of international, mostly junior riders were invited as an appreciation of their efforts in the recent past although it was clear they were not able to put up any challenge against the local riders and stables.
Endurance World HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup. Secon place.A total of 400 combinations expressed their desire to enter the HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup but the Al Wathba organisers maintained their policy in limiting the number of entries, making it a total of 270 entries.
Highest finisher of the international riders was Penny Toft – AUS (Dream Dancer TE) in 62nd position almost three hours behind the winner. First international junior rider was Polina Cherkasova – RUS (Prezioso de Matta e Padru) in 87th position.
Imke Lamsa, a Dutch Invited Junior Rider: “we, Sjabeka and I, finished our first CEI3* 160km together, Sjabeka has surprised me! The crew was amazing and all the other people who were kind enough to help. Also a huge congratulations to the other Dutch riders Ijjou Mohammed and Nanke Kramer, we all finished our first 160.”

Less happy was Sofie Dahl Larsen – NOR (Al Samah) who was in 68th position after the second loop: “I decided to retire after the third loop. All was going well but after the second loop we felt something was not right and the vet discovered a snack got stuck in my horse’s throat. Luckily it passed after a while. The third loop was hard for both of us, unfortunately the same problem occurred and therefore we retired.”

Endurance World HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup. Chasing. The story was obviously complete different for the top runners in this 160km race split into six loops of 40, 33, 24, 23, 20 and 20km.  There were mixed reactions on the six-loop format.  The average speed was slightly higher compared to last year which could have been the result of this format having relatively short loops.

The quality of the horses was very high with two top favourites standing out of the pack, being 8 Minute from Al Wathba Stables and Shaddad from MRM Stables.

Al Wathba Stables adopted a tactic never seen before on this scale in horse racing and looked like a copy of the professional cycling teams. 8 Minute and rider Rashed Al Junaibi – UAE was constantly surrounded by team mates to protect and help him.

Endurance World HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup. Fourth place.Besides the top favourites there is always a surprise that pops up, in this race it was Abdulla Al Marri – UAE (Faraan).  Abdullah did most of the work in the last loop but had to let go of Rashed Al Junaibi, leaving enough advantage to secure second place.

The first five loops could be neglected considering the fact that before the start of the last loop six riders had an identical start time. In general the horses had a similar performance however an adjustment was required due to a technical issue with the timing system. It showed very high tension and nobody really revealed their cards.  Although the average speed was still high it was not exaggerated with the top six having similar speeds and recovery times.

The order of leaving for the final 20km was: Rashed Al Junaibi, Abdul Al Ghailani – UAE (A P Lampalagua), Saeed Al Mehairi – UAE (Shaddad), Leila Al Marzooqi – UAE (A P Birmano), Abdulla Al Marri – UAE (Faraan) and Federica Marongiu – URU (Flor del Caribe).

Endurance World HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup. They tried everything. This would be the final countdown, the battle of the fittest between 8 Minute and Shaddad. On the other hand, how long before Abdul Al Ghailani and Leila Al Marzooqi would admit defeat after a whole day of hard work?

Abdul Al Ghailani could not keep up and would ultimately finish in twelfth position, a very satisfactory result.
Leila was able to hold on for a very long time with the third podium place as a result. Her comments: “Honestly this feels like a victory because it was not an easy day since there was a constant pressure.  We worked very hard and I’m very happy.”

Considered as an outsider but being able coop was Abdulla Al Marri who did most of the work in this crucial loop.  It looked like he could take victory however was overtaken when Rashed Al Junaibi pressed one more time with a final increase in speed.
Comments from his stable F3 Stables: “When you’re so close to winning such an important race and see that top spot sliding away in the last kilometre it is hard and disappointing. But coming second after such a champion horse is not really a defeat. Today we proved the capabilities of the stable and for sure tomorrow we will be very happy with this result.”

Endurance World HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup. Going well.Rashed Al Junaibi had to push till the very end to secure victory in the HH The President of UAE Endurance Cup, still fresh after winning the CEI2* 120km last week at the same venue. Even a broken stirrup halfway the loop did not hinder the champion.
Obviously Al Wathba Stables was overjoyed: “Talking about a perfect example of a team effort? You’re right that everything was focussed on 8 Minute but we thought this was the best strategy. You have to realise that there was fierce competition as all our colleague stables worked as hard as we did. True we had the biggest favourite for gold which also comes with extra pressure. Like said before, nothing comes easy in this region because each race is a massive challenge. We had three horses in the top four at the start of the last loop which was very satisfying.”
