Juma’s Team imposes its law in the 64th Raid of Barcelona – Santa Susanna

Sant Pol de Mar, Barcelona. Thursday 7, Friday 8 and Saturday 9 December 2017. Last weekend the 64th edition of the Barcelona Raid – Santa Susanna, the oldest equestrian raid in Europe, was held in Santa Susanna, Barcelona.

Constitution Day and the historical festive atmosphere of the Raid, which closes every year the competitive season, drew a big crowd to the town centre to watch the best riders in full action.
Participants of 15 nationalities attended the events in Santa Susanna, which premiered a new organization and timing system, as well as a new GPS tracking technology so that the public could follow the horses through the different routes over the Serra del Montnegre.

Endurance World Santa Susanna. Big group. On this occasion, the Raid consisted of 4 events: on Thursday the CEI1* 83km was held, and on Friday and Saturday three double-day events: the CEI2* of 2 x 76km, the CEI2*YJ of 2 x 76km and the jewel of the weekend, the CEI3* of 2 x 96km which appeared to be very hard competition from its first minutes.
María Alvarez – ESP, former world champion and member of Juma’s Team, won the CEI3* with Saphir El Fayad and was crowned in Santa Susana as the best rider of the weekend. The podium was followed by her stable mate Alejandra Dachs – ESP with Simbel Al Ain, who finished a split second behind Alvarez, and Omar Blanco – ESP with Upedro (also from Juma’s Team) completed the podium.
Omar who was leading after the first loop always swapped positions with his stable mates whereas Maria took the lead halfway the race.

In the other races we saw few surprises: the current Spanish Champion Paula Muntala – ESP from Juma’s Team, was the fastest in the CEI2* with SW Desert and a few seconds behind her finished Gil Berenguer – ESP with Ameskan. Paula and Gil controlled the race from early on and also here it could have been a complete Juma’s Team podium if third finisher Subirana Verges Jana – ESP (Asmar Du Barthas) had not been vetted out at the final gate for irregular gait.
Joan Moret – ESP with The Right Way benefitted of this to claim a deserved third place.
Another rider who had an option for the podium place was David Serrano– ESP (Sambel Kryss Pacha) but got vetted out before the last loop because of irregular gait.

Endurance World Santa Susanna. In full attack. In the CEI2* junior race is was again a complete Juma’s Team podium with Jana Oms – ESP claiming victory with Ramses de la Rotja. Jana had been swapping places the whole race with Maite Pradera – ESP (Sesgo) till the last loop when Maite slowed down and settled for fifth place.
Second place went to Manon Capitaine -FRA (Nevat Mir) with in third spot Kenza Bettenfeld – FRA (SW Duo).

The CEI1* had another close finish with four riders crossing the line within 12 seconds. First place went to Guillem Soldevilla – ESP (Valkiry La Coudrelle) before Simone Ceotto – ITA (Abath Hipolyte) and Ingrid Jordana – ESP (Llampec-JM).

The organiser concluded: “In total, 160 pairs ended up participating in the races, where the high level of dropouts and disqualifications showed the great technical level offered to the competitors. The Raid of Barcelona – Santa Susana tested the capacities of horsemen and horses in a land of great ups and downs, with a low mid December temperature made even more challenging by the rain on Friday. The Santa Susanna City Council, a great supporter and crucial partner of the Raid, saw how the great closing party on Saturday night paid tribute to the great work of confidence in the event, which is shown every year as it exceeds its numbers of participation and international interest.”
