Saif Al Mazrouei takes Nopoli Del Ma to the top at HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup

Dubai International Endurance Village, Dubai, UAE. Saturday 06 January 2018. Nopoli Del Ma confirms his supremacy at an action-packed HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup.

The HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup, part of the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Festival, is indeed a spectacle for endurance lovers. It’s a New Year tradition for the Dubai Equestrian Club to host the Cup, and it’s fair to say that they have created a non-official World Championship where the very best horses and riders come together to fight for the prestigious title.
The Cup, a CEI3* 160km with 360 entries and more than forty combinations invited from abroad in recognition of their success in the 2017 season, highlights the commitment and drive of Sheikh Mohammed towards the sport of endurance.

Endurance World Al Maktoum Cup. Fighting for podium. This year the invited riders were clearly unable to challenge the locally-based teams and riders. There is a winter break for most riders, which means that the horses are not at their fitness peak, and have no experience in riding for so long in deep sand in very particular weather conditions.

One of the visiting riders noted: “For us it’s the highlight of the year, and many riders dream of participating in the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup. In all fairness we will never be able to compete for victory here, even if our horses had a magnificent season and are still in good condition. For us it’s an honour to be recognised for what we did and to be part of this kind of event, as well as to experience the local hospitality.”

The 160km was divided into five loops of 40, 35, 35, 32 and 18km. The fourth loop of 32km was the biggest concern for the riders.

Endurance World Al Maktoum Cup. Fatma.Between all the top riders one name stands out and it’s from a horse: Nopoli Del Ma, considered as the best horse of the last few years by many experts. And also victorious at the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup three years ago ridden by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
But it is fair to say that that Nopoli Del Ma was challenged, and victory didn’t come easily, analysing the last loop where the first place was under threat till the end.

After the first loop Maitha Al Qubaisi – UAE (LT Dende) emerged as the first leader but was vetted out after the second loop for irregular gait.
A top contender who got vetted out early was Salem Al Kitbi – UAE (Al Theeb), who usually works his way through the standings as a race progresses, but was here in the leading group from the start.
After the fourth loop, five contenders were looking at a podium spot, although the fifth position, Abdulla Al Marri -UAE (Faraan) was more than two minutes behind leader Saif Al Mazrouei – UAE (Nopoli Del Ma). Having said that, it has been proved in the past that this deficit can be easily dissolved in the UAE, even in a relatively short loop of 18km.

Endurance World Al Maktoum Cup. Good position. The biggest challenger for Saif looked to be Mohammed Al Marri – UAE (LC Menta), who started the final loop in second position, albeit less than a minute behind.
For sure there were no relaxed faces during the resting period leading up to the fifth loop, and all five passed the mandatory re-check without issues.

Saif Al Mazrouei – but more importantly, Nopoli Del Ma – kept up their role to claim back a title that the horse won three years ago with Sheikh Hamdan. The most resistance came from Abdulla Al Marri, and it was only at the finish line that Nopoli would succeed.

In the words of the winning stable MRM Stables: “No, that was not an easy one. Everybody praises Nopoli Del Ma and it looks almost if we didn’t win and came second it would come as a loss. The competition in this region is always very hard and you could see that today again. Abdulla almost took the victory away from us and what he did was really amazing. Yes, we won the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup and you can’t believe how happy we’re about this. The whole team has to work very hard for this.”

With his 18 years of age Saif is no stranger to winning important events after he claimed first place in the CEI2* 120km World Championship for Young Horses in Italy in 2015.
Endurance World Al Maktoum Cup. Following from behind. He commented: “My horse is a champion horse, no doubt about it. This is such an important race, and for me, winning this is incredible. You can describe it as my biggest achievement in my career.”

You would expect disappointment in the camp of second-placed Abulla Al Marri, F3 Stables: “Who doesn’t want to win the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup? Yes, we came back in these last kilometres from a long way back and everything felt good. And now that it’s sunk in what we achieved, we’re very pleased with this second place. A big team effort from our stable.”

Third place went to Saeed Al Mehairi – UAE (Nabi du Cassou) who made it a very satisfying day for MRM Stables, making it first and third place for the team.
