Saif Al Mozroui confirms in Al Marmoon Endurance Cup that Nopoli Del Ma is still a champion.

Dubai International Endurance Village, Dubai, UAE. Wednesday 15 and Saturday 19 November 2017. In case there was any doubt: Nopoli Del Ma is still a champion after taking victory in the Al Marmoon Endurance Cup.

That was Saturday but on Wednesday a CEI2* 120km was scheduled with close to 400 entries. The organiser decided to opt for a staggered start, an inaugural for the endurance riding in a 2star event.
Although it took a certain competition, stress and suspense away, most of the reactions were very positive as it was a more relaxed way of racing.

Endurance World Al Marmoon Endurance Cup. The winner.“Let us be honest, the main focus is to get a lot of horses qualified for the Sheikh Mohmmed Cup in January and this initiative can be described as a big success. A lot of horses finished, hence the name of the event which was CEI2* 120km qualifier. “

First place went to Jonatan Rivera – URU (Sultan) who was one of the few riders who had the intention to fight for the victory. Second was Abdulla Al Marri – UAE (Lockelea Starwood Comet) with in third place Mohamed Aida – ALG (Vegas Cabirat).

Saturday’s event was the Al Marmoon Endurance Cup, a CEN 120km with, for UAE standard, a small entry field of 120 combinations.

Endurance World Al Marmoon Endurance Cup. Chasing.“Yes, the start field is smaller because the focus this week was on the CEI2* 120km qualifier last Wednesday. But having said that there is the champion horse Nopoli Del Ma, who did not always end with good results last years, so let us see what happens.” Was the general comment of the day.

Most riders were surprised by the fast start and it was Mohammed Saeed – UAE (Galileo) who was leading after the first loop. After the second loop it was game over for Mohammed because of metabolic.

New leaders came up after the second and third loop, however the fight was so intense that a lot of title contenders fell victim of the tough conditions and had to retire. Typically for the races in the United Arab Emirates nobody was really dominating the event.

Obviously the main focus in this Al Marmoon Endurance Cup was on Nopoli Del Ma who was, till the third loop, not doing a faultless parkour. His recovery after the first 40km was similar to most of the other horses putting him in 20th position,  after the second loop the chestnut gelding received a penalty which resulted in a longer recovery putting him in 16th position.  At the start of the last loop we found this top horse in second position.

Endurance World Al Marmoon Endurance Cup. Maha.A lot of horses fell victim to penalties at the vet check after the third loop shaking up the top ten positions completely.

A rider who felt comfortable in the top five was Maha Khalid – MAR (Ulla de Luc): “Yes, it is going very well till now, for me it’s the first time to ride this horse. For sure the horses in front of me are very strong and as usual we can’t predict how this is going to turn out in the last loop.”
Maha finished in a rewarding fifth position.

Starting the final loop in first position was Saeed Al Khayari – UAE (Al Bazz) with a two-minute lead on Saif Al Borzoi, halfway the two riders joined each other.
For a while both riders stayed together but then the supremacy of Saif showed and eventually he would win with a minute lead.

What everybody expected came through, the title favourite won: “that’s easy to say but we had to fight till the end, we didn’t get one gift in the race. Starting with a horse like Nopoli Del Ma comes with extra pressure because everybody assumes victory is yours even before the start.” commented his stable.

Endurance World Al Marmoon Endurance Cup. In pursuit.Second place was for Saeed Al Khayari which felt as a victory for the stable: “It’s true, for us this feels like a victory. We tried to stay together in the final kilometres, but our competitor was very strong. We’re proud of becoming second knowing the reputation of Napoli.”

Third place was for Ghanim Al Owaisi – UAE (Tim Ami) who maybe could have finished closer to the leaders but was one of the victims at the third vet check where he got a penalty, presenting the horse too soon at the vet check.
