Second edition of the Coates Creek Challenge

Guides of Canada’s Rolling Hills Camp, New Lowell, Ontario, Canada. Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July 2017.
This was the second edition of the Coates Creek Challenge which attracted over 75 entries for the two-day event with competitors travelling from across the US & Canada and a smattering of entries from offshore.

The event was sanctioned by FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale), Equestrian Canada and AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference). This Coates Creek Challenge, one of only four FEI sanctioned events in Canada,  was a critical stepping stone for athletes wishing to compete in Tryon, SC at WEG 2018.
Endurance World Canada Coates Creek. Lonely rider.Despite heavy rainfall in the area the track started in great shape, due mostly to Course Designer and local Lesley Danko’s knowledge of the terrain. Pleasant weather and clear skies started the day on Saturday.

The CEI1* 80km had high average speeds and a completion rate of 100%. First place was for Donald Meuten riding Fyf Wolverine with Spencer McCleery aboard Trident and third place went to Stephen Rojek with Tribune.
Sunday dawned misty and humid, slowing down the competition, but skilful riding and management made for a high overall completion rate. USA’s Mary Kathryn Clark, aboard Beautiful Knightmare, maintained the lead throughout in the CEI1* 80km. Second was for Lee Hutten with He Cometa and Lysane Cree with Belesemo Extreme came third.

Endurance World Canada Coates Creek. In the forest.Canadian Misha Green was back on-board Robert Gielan’s ‘Contiki’ in her first FEI event since an accident put her on the side-lines several years ago.

Seven competitors qualified for the CEI3*; riding together throughout the day were USA’s Nicki Meuten aboard FYF Dutch and Holly Corcoran on Faveur. Ms Meuten crossed the finish first and garnered the Best Condition award. In third place was Canada’s Wendy MacCoubrey on her mare ‘Black Barts Lolita’, followed closely by Danielle Crouse on Gold Medal Farm’s ‘Say Gold’ Despite a track capable of producing a COC finish, a thunderstorm late in the day slowed the competition down.
Top speed for the event was 13.20 km/h. In the Open 100, three horses completed their first 100-mile event – crews and officials were able to finish their day before midnight.

Robert Gielan on More Bang for Your Buck maintained a solid lead throughout the day in the CEI2* 120km. event. Close on his tail was open rider Emma Webb on Zillary. It was great to see this former Canadian Young Rider in the event with her friend and mentor – whom she handily beat with her best condition score. Mr Gielan was one of the Ride Organizers and follows this event with knee surgery.

Endurance World Canada Coates Creek. Leaving the forest.Canada’s Emma Knapper on B Impulsive Spice It Up, won the CEI2*Junior event and Best Condition. Second was for Prater Brooks on Mirga SR and third went on Solstice Pecile on Here Comes The Boom.

The Coates Creek Challenge was the organiser’s second FEI event and we are seeing some real potential as this partnership develops. This event fell on Canada’s 150th Birthday Celebration.
Next year’s Coates Creek Challenge is already confirmed for 30 June and 1 July.
