Championship of Asturias – 19 March 2017

Giovanni Fernandez champion for second consecutive year

Championship of Asturias, Hippodrome of the Principality of Asturias, Llanes, Spain. Sunday 19 March 2017.

Championship of AsturiasOn the ancient pilgrims’ paths to Santiago de Compostela, in green northern Spain, the 16th edition of the Llanes Endurance Cup took place as a CEI1* 80km plus national and regional races over 40, 60 and 80km with limited speed. In total 71 competitors showed up.

For the 80km races the distance was over three loops, 35 and twice 25 km making a total of 85km.

In the CEI1* with 21 starters, it was a nice field and after the first loop Giovanni Fernandez (Maraco) came in first and thanks to a good recovery occupied first place.

Alejandra Mar Gonzalez (Mar Airam) came in close behind but her horse needed more time to recover. She lost the connection with the leader but still obtained the second spot.

Championship of AsturiasAfter this first loop we lost a potential title contender in Gorka Llaguno (Rabel Faress) who was vetted out.

Close after Alejandra Perez came Paola Noriega (Hechicero MA) which promised to be a tough fight. But although they came in together after the second loop Alejandra Perez was vetted out with irregular gait. In the front Giovanni Fernandez was in full control thanks to the good speeds and perfect recovery of the horse.

Paola Noriega had a new contender behind her, Jose Ignacio Corral (Lucas), who was in fifth position after the first loop.

There were two main questions before the final loop: could Giovanni Fernandez be crowned for a second year in a row and how would the battle for second place turn out?

Championship of AsturiasThere was no suspense at the front as Giovanni crossed the finish line first with a safe lead on the fighting duo behind him. His average speed was 18.94 km/h.

Jose Ignacio Corral recorded the highest speed in the final loop and managed to close the gap with Paola Noriega but came ten seconds short in order to get the silver place.

David Abad (Nadin Fay) was the only entrance for the CEN 80km, and was awarded second place for the Asturias Championship mixed and the first place for the national race.

In the limited speed CET 80km there were 15 entrants with first leader Isabelino Gutiérrez (Tsunami de Torre) dropping to third place after the second loop. Leading was Pedro Maiz Icaza (Rohf Orion), but he got caught by exceeding the maximum speed limit in a sprint at the finish with Alejandro Fernández (Pitagoras de Belene). Alejandro came in only six seconds after Perdo but stayed just within the limits.

Second place went to Nelida Diego (Vel-Jafar) with Erlant Larrazabal (Fly) finalising the podium places.
