Three nationalities on the podium in Barre des Cévennes

Barre des Cévennes, Lozère, France. Friday 7, Saturday 8, and Sunday 9 July.
Three days of racing were scheduled in this small town in the South of France from young horses races on the first day of competition, to CEI2*120km on Saturday and CEI1* 80km on Sunday.

Barre des Cévennes citizens are used to see horses in their village because in September the first stop of the « Les 160km de Florac » is here, at the sunrise. For the 120km, five nations were represented with 26 French riders, 3 Spanish, 4 Brazilians, 2 riders from Oman and 1 Qatari. This great diversity was finally reflected on the podium with a Spanish, Omani and French rider!

Endurance World Barre des Cévennes. Fighting for the podium.A total of 36 combinations started the race at 07:00 for the first loop of 32km, with a lot of downhill in the first part and  at the end a climb until the vet gate. When the horses arrived at Barre des Cévennes, a group of eight riders had broken away with a lead of three minutes. Marion Wasilewki – FRA was the first to enter the vet-gate with just over a minute of recovery and a speed of 17.68km/h, followed by Ludovic Saroul – FRA, Claude Cerlati – FRA and Josep Roma Puig – ESP in less than one minute later. There were no eliminations at the first vet check.

Endurance World Barre des Cévennes. Ending a loop. The second loop was longer (34km) and more difficult so the riders slowed down, the first combination, Josep Roma Puig (Anromina RP), did this loop at the speed of 16.09 km/h. At the vet-gate temperatures increased and wind dropped, the hot weather was one parameter which extended the recovery time and some horses went in with a heart rate that was too high. Eight horses got eliminated at this point.

At the departure of the third loop Josep Roma Puig had a lead of 19 seconds on Faisal Al Farsi – OMA (Penchab Sully), 48 seconds on Ludovic Saroul (Ulysse De Perigneux) and 51 seconds on Alex Crivillé Tapias – ESP (Bradi). This loop was similar to the previous one, however speeds dropped. Faisal Al Farsi had an average speed of 17.48km/h and he was leading Josep Roma Puig with 41 seconds.

Endurance World Barre des Cévennes. Going well. The two riders had a gap of six minutes on the group with Ludovic Saroul, Crivillé Tapias and Wasileski. The leaders completed the final 20km with a speed of 24km/h, on a loop which was far to be flat! At the end of the stage the riders had to cross a dangerous part of the village. Faisal Al Farsi and Josep Roma Puig were together when Faisal fell and Josep waited for his competitors. A beautiful gesture rewarded and the Spanish rider won the final sprint. The three pursuers arrived 20 minutes later, and in the sprint, it was Marion Wasileski – FRA (Dipolyte des Vabres) who claimed the final podium spot.

On Sunday 50 combinations started in the 80km, both in CEI and CEN. At the end, it was Laetitia Goncalves – FRA (Akima Des Ayssades), already 14th in the 120km the previous day, who took the first place with an average speed of 17.53 km/h and doing the last loop at 22.82 km/h. Less than one minute behind was Livia Robert – FRA (Zaim El Jawahir) who took the second position, and third place went to Clara Meunier – FRA (Shouri de Lis).
