Hituzaingo Racetrack, Trinidad, Flores, Uruguay. Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 February 2018. Thanks to the Emirati hospitality, the Uruguayan riders, trainers, farriers and vets, all very active during the UAE season (when summer starts in the south hemisphere), managed to continue training horses in Uruguay and flew over to compete.

Meanwhile the season started mid summer in central Uruguay. Although it didn’t look there were many participants, a total of 137 horses came to compete last weekend.

Endurance World Trinidad. Reaching high speedsSummer is the time breeders start qualifying their young horses.  In the characteristic vast Uruguayan countrysides,  most foals are born in spring (September) which is also the season breeders select the best horses of a new generation to start the taming process.

It was a pleasure to see the new horses on track on Saturday in Trinidad, but the stars of the race were the CEI2* 120km participants who overpassed the 24km/h average speed in a fast track under hot weather and very hard surface. The race was divided in four loops 38.5, 34.5km, 28 and 19km.
Dr. Fernanda Villar, winner in the senior category, told us “the air was hot and horses couldn’t make a good heart recovery”.

In senior category, the riders were all together each loop, and Sebastian Landriel – URU with Maruco was the leader in the first 3 loops. Following Maruco, was El Caruca with Rogelio Angelo – URU, pushing as usual.  Unfortunately El Caruca was eliminated in the third loop by metabolism.

Endurance World Trinidad. Close up.Fernanda Villar – URU (Duque) made a penalty in the third loop, she was 11 minutes behind Maruco. Fernanda told us “After an unfair penalty, I had no longer the ambition to win. I came galloping to finish in second position, but I saw Maruco 300 meters in front and sped up a bit“. Fernanda came first and maintained the position until the finish, Sebastian could push the experienced Maruco but he maintained the pace to finish in second position.

Second place Sebastian Landriel told us “The track was hard but in very good condition as Trinidad has accustomed us! Maruco finished the 120km with an average speed of 22.6 km/h, had a lot of energy and was recovering well even while the heat was intense in the last two loops”.

FEI Open Ranking Winner 2017, Pilar Saravia – URU was raiding HLP Fantastica and finished third, however did not pass the last vet check being metabolic. In third position arrived Tom Macguinnes – IRL riding Positano HLM.

Endurance World Trinidad. Side by side.In the first two loops of the CEI2* Young Rider, Paula Lorenz  from Chili, riding RV Sultan was in first position racing fast followed by Ema Sanchez – URU (ST Duwfa). The girls arrived together to the finish line galloping but taking care of the horses, Ema crossed first and was the final Winner with an average speed of 24.07km.h.

Ema told us: “ST Duwfa is trained by Leandro Zubiaurre, the 120km were difficult more than anything because of the heat. The horse ran a very good race and finished in good condition”.

In third position, 45 minutes behind, arrived Diego Macalister – URU riding AS Asar.

Competitions of CEI2* 120km and CEI1* 80km were carried out both in Major and Young Riders categories.

Endurance World Trinidad. Happy. On Sunday the CEI1* 80km here in Trinidad was divided into three stages of 33.5, 28.5 and 19km. This race was the more crowded and competitive one of the weekend. The weather at the first hours of the morning was cold and cloudy.

In the senior race, all the competitors arrived together in a group to the first water point. From then on they started to spread out.  First in the vet check arrived Guzman Elissalde – URU riding Roble Marbella , second Juana Bacot – URU riding EA Lorenzo Del Alma and in third position Agustin Rubi – URU riding Baraka Temple.

In the second loop, four horses were leading the race, the three mentioned earlier and Don Julio with Domingo Mayobre – URU.  However in the last loop Don Julio was left behind and the three other horses pushed very hard and raced with an average speed of 26.11km/h.  In the last 800 meters the pure Arab Baraka Temple brought more power to the sand of the Trinidad hippodrome and dominated the race, taking the winner position.

Endurance World Trinidad. In full speed.Dario Castro, trainer of the Winner Baraka Temple ridden by Agustin Rubi, told us:
“Agustin ran as we asked and with great confidence, he put the horse behind the others and was waiting the moment to start to run. Close to entering the racecourse, where there are several curves and narrows a bit the track, they were running in great shape, showing a GPS speed of 48km / hour. We are really happy for the whole team, we believed in this horse, since we got it as a colt he showed us his temperament and resistance. Greetings to all who competed and congratulations to the others who put everything to make it a great race “

EA Lorenzo del Alma a young horse finished in second place with Juana Bacot, who told us: “I have great expectations with my horse; he has a great ability to gallop and an extremely low heart rate. In the first loop his recovery time was 1 minute and 54 seconds and his cardiac frequency was 40. The last loop was very emotional because the three horses started very close to each other and we stayed together until the last meters, where we started galloping at a very high speed in order to win the race. In the last lap we made an average speed of 26km/h, where the maximum speed that my GPS framed was 46km/h. I am really happy because my horse finished in excellent conditions”.

Endurance World Trinidad. Concentrated.Third place Guzman Elizssalde declared: “I think we all tried to take care of the horses since it was the first race of the season and we knew it was going to be tough. But it was a nice race and we could make a good average speed”.

In Young Rider category the winner was Agustina Baptista – URU with EL Elegido: “We were lucky to start the season very well, the horse behaved spectacular in his debut. He made a very good average speed (24.02km/h) on one of the fastest tracks we have in Uruguay. Parts of the track were a little hard but it was always about taking advantage in the good parts. The horse has a good recovery that favors us a lot, he is very good and we think he will have great future.”

In second position CEI1* Young Rider, one more time on the podium was Ema Sanchez – URU riding EO Salah. She told us: “This horse surprised us”. In third position arrived Pierina Olviera – URU riding Roble JQ Tuan Norah.
