USA South East FEI Fundraiser Rides – 27, 28 January 2017

Broxton Bridge Plantation, USA. 27-28 January 2017

In the USA, FEI rides are co-sanctioned with AERC National Federation in order to make the rides more affordable.

Thus, Broxton Bridge Plantation started an estimated 175 horses, including 54 FEI horses, over the two days. Distances included a 160km, two 120km and two 80km with senior and junior/young divisions plus an introductory distance ride of 24km for riders new to distance events.

In addition to US athletes, the 54 FEI horses included riders from Argentina, Bermuda, Canada, Ecuador, Great Britain, Ireland, Lithuania, Norway, Romania and Slovakia for a total of 11 countries represented. Young riders Ampalo Gonzalez-Aubone (Grand Ku) from Argentina, Manuela Jaramillo (Djets Favorite) from Ecuador, Hannah Moss (Om El Fidelmo) from Ireland, and Kate Bishop (Mojo) and Charlie Koester (Treasured Moments) from the USA successfully completed their CEI1* 80km rides.

Marvin Brangman (DCL Mooi Frangelico) from Bermuda completed his CEI2* 120km ride as he works towards WEG qualifications.

“I’d love to come back in November”

Samantha Yates (Spotless Summer Magic) from the UK also completed the CEI2*120km, and stated: “This was my first time at Broxton, and it was such a well-run ride, on really great trails, so I’d love to come back in November.”

Erin Lemmons Innes (Ogee) won the CEI3* 160km and then on the second day finished in the second podium place with Rich Laurie in the CEI1* 80km. Cheryl Van Deusen (Hoover the Mover) came fourth in the CEI3* 160km, and was the only athlete to ride the CEI3* 160km on Day 1 and the CEI2* 120km (with Precious Beaunita) on the second day, where she came sixth.

In 2015, Cheryl was classified second in the FEI World Endurance Rider rankings at the year’s end, but 2016 was fraught for her, with three different injuries allowing only a four-month competition schedule. She is happy to be alive and back in the saddle.

On Day 1, the senior CEI2* 120km was won by Heather Reynolds (Don De Fe) while Jamie Lemon (WHR Sleak Streak) won the Day 2 senior CEI2* 120km.

This is a wonderful course on which to earn a COC for WEG, as long as the rain, snow and ice stay away. There are USA South East FEI Fundraisers in January and November each year. This year, one part of the course was extremely muddy and made for strategic riding by the athletes. Jerry Varn, the owner of Broxton Bridge Plantation, has invested a large amount amount of money in trail improvements on the east side of the plantation. Plans are under way for the same types of improvements in drainage for the west side.

Broxton Bridge was also the host for the 2016 Young Riders Endurance Team Challenge, a CEI2* 120km team challenge.
