Fun In The Sun (FITS) Endurance Rides, Williston FL, USA. Thursday 2, Friday 3 and Saturday 4 March 2017.

A total of 12 races were scheduled for this action-packed three-day weekend.

Thursday 2 March 2017

Fun In The Sun (FITS) Endurance RidesTwo combinations entered the CEIYJ1* 80km with Windsor Mundy (Amtrak) taking top honours before Lena Gray (DJB Ezen).

In the CEI1* 80km there was just one starter, but Norwegian rider Yvonne Kuder (War Blessings) was vetted out at the second gate because of irregular gait.

Three started in the CEIYJ2* 120km, with Annie Whelan (Wallace Hill Leo) in a commanding role. With an average speed of 15.1 km/h she had an impressive lead of almost one and half hours on Anya Levermann (DCL Mooi Penny), with third place taken by Lexi Vollman (Theatric).

In the CEI2* 120km (15 starters) Cheryl Van Deusen (Hoover the Mover) built a big enough lead over four loops to ride carefully in the final stretch and dominate the race.  She finished with an average speed of 16.6 km/h.

The remaining two podium places went to sisters Jenna (Satarra) and Amanda (Bit o Both) Van Doorn who crossed the finish line in that order. Amanda had a slower first loop but her final loop was the quickest of the field, giving her the opportunity to finish together with her sister.

Friday 3 March 2017

Unfortunately, there were no starters in the CEIYJ1* 80km.

Fun In The Sun (FITS) Endurance RidesIn the CEI1* 80km Gene Limlaw (DM Michelangelo) was the sole starter, finishing the race with an average speed of 14.3 km/h.

Six starters were present for the CEIYJ2* 120km, but only one managed to finish, with Lexi Vollman (Savanaa Night) also the only rider to start the final loop. She became the winner with an average speed of 15.2 km/h.

Trying to take control of the race at the beginning was Katie Baldino (JG Btash), but the horse was retired by the rider after the second loop.

A total of 12 starters were in the CEI2* 120km and it was Ellen Olson (HV Khemofix My Heart) in charge. Although her average speed was 15.2 km/h, lower than Cheryl, she left the second-placed rider (Marvin Brangman (DCL Mooi Frangelico)) more than an hour behind her.

Fun In The Sun (FITS) Endurance RidesIt wasn’t all that easy for Marvin since Australian Stella Harbison (Magical Mikada) was never far behind. But a slightly superior third and fourth loop gave him a two-minute advantage over the third-placed rider.

We saw no starters for the CEIYJ3* 160km.

The longest race, CEI3* 160km, attracted a total of 18 combinations.  The leader after two loops was Margaret Sleeper (Syrocco Cadence), but then the horse was retired by the rider.

Another rider with ambition was Jamie Lemon (Shamwari), but he was vetted out at the first gate for irregular gait.

The day was a success for Robert Gielen (More Bang For Your Buck), who was very consistent and always the quickest in every loop, which gave him the opportunity to ride a risk-free final loop by going slower. His average speed was 16.0 km/h.

Second place went to Danielle Crouse (AM Mysterious Mopsa) who was trading places with Hilda Hick Donahue (Mirga SR) to cross the finish line only 10 seconds apart.

With two world endurance completions behind him, Canadian rider and winner of the FITS 160km Bob Gielen (66) stated: “A rider of a 160k must have everything in place before the race, and must believe in the horse and himself. He also feels that a knowledgeable and professional crew is imperative to success in any key endurance race.”

Saturday 4 March 2017

Fun In The Sun (FITS) Endurance RidesThe CEIYJ1* 80km had one starter, Ainsley Suskey (Burnin Dezyre), who was vetted out for irregular gait after the first loop.

In the CEI1* 80km there were six starters with Jeremy Reynolds (Tu For The Money) in full control with an average speed of 16.4 km/h. Second came Cheryl Van Deusen (Nazeefs Flashy Rose) whose average speed dropped in the last loop to give Gene Limlaw (Alfano Matinee Rossa) the opportunity to come closer for the third podium spot.

As a matter of interest, eleven Canadians travelled an average of 3600 kilometres to get to this race, with Canadian Bob Geilen winning the 160km.

Canadian Tracy Vollman from Saskatchewan had this to say about the FITS races:

“The race is so well organized, trails are well marked and beautiful. And everyone is so friendly and supportive. Kudos to Valerie Kanavy and her crew for putting in such a fantastic ride.”
